fig.1-1 The color wheel

  • The psychology of color
fi.1-9 The psychology of color

Warm color: evoke feelings of happiness, optimism and energy. But yellow, red and orange can also have an attention grabbing effect and signal danger or make you take action.

Cool color: calming and soothing but can also express sadness. Purple is often used to help spark creativity as it's a mixture of blue (calm) and red (intense).

Black: adds an air of sophistication and elegance, and also mystery, though with much bolder confidence.

White: gives off an impression of clean, virtuous and healthy.

  • Elaborate 2 more colors (exercise)
Brown: A sense of strength and reliability because the color is often seen as sollid and resilience. But sometimes it includes feeling of loneliness and isolation especially it gets darker.

Blue: Feelings of calmness and relaxation. this color is seen as a sign of stability and reliability. Many businesses often utilize this color to show an image of security. Also, it reminds us of sadness or aloofness.

PRACTICAL & TUTORIAL

I made double exposure following instruction video given us and change background color. I'll explain process in my own double exposure.

  • My own double exposure
To begin with making my own double exposure, I searched some examples on Pinterest and decide what kind of double exposure I do.

fig.2-2 Searching Pinterest

Here's original pictures I used for this task.

fig.2-3 Original pictures I used

The first step is turning pictures into monochrome, going image, mode and selected greyscale. I wanted to make the headphone flower pattern so I click Flip horizontal, clipping mask and use blending mode "linear light" at 50%.

fig.2-4 The process in headphone

After that I selected my pictures with quick selection tools and refined edges to make it smooth. Then output as select layer with layer mask. It feels like contrast of this image was a bit weak so I added curves layer to emphasize shadow and highlight. Plus I adjusted place of pictures.

fig.2-5 Selection and Refine

Before I started following task, I create new layer, add "solid color" and create background. I wanted to plant flower and cat on my head, So I searched youtube how to do that and watched this video:https://youtu.be/iOYz669WNpU?si=2aMmjVxXX8-A4l5K

To summarize what I did in this process, placing cat and flower pic with layer mask which reflects silhouette of myself pic. After that, match the background color with the image and unmask a part of my head with brush. Then I duplicate the cat & flower pic, delete original layer mask and create new layer mask. In the end, I could plant flower and cat on my head with brush tool.

At the end, I copy the original picture with layer mask and flipped horizontal and change its size and opacity to 23%. (The others cannot be seen because I wanted to see the original picture and flipped one clearly in this picture.)

Ex)Some exploration & Reflection

I explored some ideas while making my own double exposure. For example I tried to make my hair starry night sky and apply to background too, like the starry sky is spreading out from my head. But I got lost in the middle of this task. Using clipping mask is kind of easy for me but applying background and within a picture was difficult. I think I have mastered the basics, so I want to be able to apply what I wanted in this task well. I thought it would be interesting to look at some videos and apply them to my next assignment, making posters.
