Task 3: Illustrated Typography Poster
Lecture, Practical & Tutorial
I learned how to create typography using intertwin, 3D effects, cripping masks, and envelope distortion in the lectures. After that, I tried to use them with my name, numbers, and the word "fish." Here's the practical work during classes:
Note:
object intertwin
ctrl y = view line n direct selection
object path = make it smooth
create outline compound path arrange it, and send it back (pattern) gripping mask
Task 3: Illustrated Typography Poster
- Searching
At first, I searched around the typography design and poster on Pinterest. My quote is "Music controls the gravity of my emotions." So I focused on the words music, gravity, and emotions for the typographical design. Plus, I looked into Paula Scher, who is a famous designer, and I got some inspiration from some of her work.(https://www.pentagram.com/ )

- Sketch
My quote has 7 words, so I separated them when I designed typography, considering layout for DPI. I have a few ideas at this stage, one is that the word "music" is transformed into notes. Another is likening to music player, outer space, jumping letters, and so on. After showing my sketch, the teacher gave me advice that the word music being effected by the word gravity would be good, so I added my ideas and combined them. Here's my sketch:

- Process
Before beginning to create posters, I explore the composition using a poster I made for DPI. I chose the one on the bottom right as a base and started designing typography. Using Illutrator.

As for the "music," I designed it like notes, using the way to envelop distortion, direct selection, and curvature. After creating two ellipses, I separated us and ic for each circle part of the note and used envelope division. When I do this, I change the letter size to balance out. M is for the upper part. The original letter of M's center part is lower, so I adjusted to upper using the direct selection tool. The connection between us, ic and M, is also weired and not connected, so I adjusted by curature.

Next, I designed the minor words "the" and "my." Considering a composition base I made, it should come with another word "control" and "emotion." However, as I explored, I wanted to change it. I made "the" condensed with direct selection because it is not an important word, and I didn't want it to occupy space. As for "my," I made down part of y longer to express shedding tears, which is one of emotions.

There are many kinds of emotions, so I expressed them by painting with different shapes like zigzag and curv. The word "emotion" has two "o." I use a bigger "o" instead of using two "o."

As for the "controls and "of," I used original typeface without any change except painting "o" with white in controls. After designing all letters, I decided the final composition for the part "controls the" and "of emotion." The poster has empty space on the bottom left, so I filled the space with words to balance out, like block.

Reflection
Desining letters based on daily quotes was fun for me because I could think of the background or various ways of expression and then apply it to a visual poster. When I finished this poster, I was moved by the sense of accomplishment from creating the poster by myself. Also, final work is different from compostion layout with improvement. Actually, I struggled with compose, and there might be a better wayout, but I did my best. I thought about mixing 2D and 3D, but it felt off, so I decided to stick with 2D this time. However, I would like to try it once my skills improve more.
