Theme is everyday design, which refers to the design elements that are seamlessly integrated into daily life. These designs may not be iconic or extravagant but play a crucial role in shaping the cultural and functional aspects of society.

  • Visual information culture
Visuals are a powerful persuasive medium to provide most of our information about the world.

  • The definition of Visuals
Everything that can be seen__this means widem all-inclusive, including nature but nature is not culture, unless there's meaning and representation attached to it

Everything produced or created by humans that can be seen__this proposes that the visual is everything that can be seen and which is produced or created by humans for the purpose of visual representation that has functions, content, and communicative purpose.

There is a cultural difference in design's recognition, such as the tattoo can be perceived differently depending on the culture. For example, the sailor's tatoo accounts of the upper body, which style tells the stories of jouneys made along the open water. On the other hand, the Japanese tatoos begen as a means of conveying social status traditionally. Designers are required to consider this kind of perspective difference (design sensitivity).

  • Design significance & system
Identifying the social, cultural, and political sphere where the design elements reside is important to create designs that resonate with diverse audiences.

Project 1: Proposal (Week 1-3)

During our group discussion, everyone was eager to explore different cultures and exchange ideas. Audrey gave a detailed explanation of traditional handicrafts, while Diba shared her enthusiasm for rock culture. Jahlani talked about Japan’s vending machine and convenience culture; Komu delved into the world of collecting; and Zou Xinyue introduced and analyzed street graffiti culture.

We made a decision by majority vote, and collecting culture and street graffiti culture are chosen. The group decided to summarize and compare both topics. After receiving feedback from our lecturer, we decided to analyze graffiti art as a theme.

Next, we focused on research, sketching, and visual reference to deepen our understanding of graffiti art culture. As we proceeded with these tasks, we decided to focus on Perceptions of Graffiti Art under Different Cultures. Also, one of our group members sketched a design about the integration of different countries using street graffiti style. She took letters as the main theme and then incorporated local cultures into them. She planned to apply these patterns to the use of daily items, such as clothes or bags. Project 2: Data Collection (Week 4-5)

For data collection, we conducted a case study with 3 graffiti artists in different countries and a survey about the way to see graffiti art. We divide the work as follows: 

  • create the questions_Jahlani.
  • create the questionnaire link_Gaoxinpeng
  • conduct the visual analysis_Komu
  • conduct research_Diba
  • make the PPT_Audrey & Xinyue

I'm responsible for visual analysis. Our theme is Perceptions of Graffiti Art under Different Cultures, so based on the previous research, I chose 3 graffiti arts in Malaysia, America, and England. I analyzed this graffiti art based on the genre of graffiti, style, color, and so on. Here's the results we've done in Project 2:

Project 3: Final Project & Portfolio (weeks 6-7)

Our content type for TikTok is vlogs and interviews with local graffiti artist, Ekamil Razali. We dived into two teams and explored around the Zhongshan Building and Petaling Street, respectively. I participated the team exploring Zhongshan Building and was the host for the TikTok video, introducing and ending the short video. My team walked around the building and stopped by some shops inside the building, but there weren't any productions like stationary printed graffiti art, so we moved to Central Market to see if there's something related to graffiti. The other team walked around Petaling Street, and luckily, they succeeded in contacting a local graffiti artist, so they shot a video with him. Here's the all-round result for final projects.

In this assignment, I could deepen my insight about my own perspective of graffiti art and some other cultures in the point of everyday design by comparing and analyzing. Originally, I was not familiar with graffiti art because in my native country, Japan, people tend to see it as an impression of mischief or poor public safety. However, in Malaysia, for example, graffiti art is used as a way to revive the city and such. Through exploring KL, I realized a fact that the view towards the graffiti art I had also related to everyday design because they are painted buildings and roads, which is something we always use. While exploring, what I found particularly interesting was a cafe. Instead of using a sign, its name and building design were entirely created through murals, a form of graffiti art. Moreover, in the data collection, I find it very interesting that the style and purpose of graffiti art tends to vary by region. For example, in Western countries, it is often used to convey political messages. At first, I struggled with how to connect graffiti art to everyday design. However, as I learned more about different graffiti styles, I realized that it provides a lot of ways to communicate one's message and presence in society. This expression exists not only in public spaces but also in our clothing and accessories, as a part of everyday design. When I come across interesting works or objects in everyday life, I want to think about how they are connected to different concepts.
