MBI

Weekly progress

  • Weeks 1-2

We formed a team of 6-7 members, with no more than 2 specializations in the team. We chose "Cooling the Heat and Healing the Mind (CHHM)" as a client project.
Group Members:
  1. Kimberly Miaw Jya Nee (GD & group leader)
  2.  Zhou Bo Ying (GD)
  3.  Ye Ying Ying (UI/UX)
  4.  Nathan Wira Susanto (UI/UX)
  5.  Yong Sun Lu (UI/UX)
  6.  Komugi Uchibori (ED)
  7.  Tan Sing Yee (ED)

We conducted general research about the project and thought up the interview questions for the clients.

  • Weeks 3-4
We refined and extracted information from research we conducted last week and held an online meeting to decide the interview question and project idea.

  • Weeks 5-6
We conducted interviews with the security guard and food vendors (people working outside) individually to know the real working situation with empathy. I interviewed the noodle stall worker and learned how he felt about his thoughts about working outside.

  • Week 7
We made presentation slides for the first submission, including research, interviews, user personas, and so on. Also, we drew creative ideas in the physical class.

  • Weeks 8-9

We made mid-term presentation slides for the client meeting in week 9, but that was put off because the client is unwell.

  • Week 10-12
We conducted a presentation and got feedback:

  1. The flow of slides is clear, which is good
  2. The proposed idea (mobile hydration + awareness campaign) is good, but the outdoor workers don’t have convenient access to water (hydration), and it is actually the company’s responsibility to provide it.
  3. Budgeting issues: How will this project be funded? Making it a fully funded initiative is difficult + not sure if it can be done long-term.
  4. Brainstormed and refined the idea.
  5. Focus on accessibility since awareness point is not really suitable/aligning with our goal
Based on these, we planned the following task to improve our ideas:
  1. Refine our proposed idea such as our current mobile hydration service which can be another type of service/system that provides clean water access/cooling rest.
  2. Send the refined proposed idea to Dr Wong & Dr Praveena.

However, we got stuck with this phase, so we consulted with Dr. Wong in physical class. As a result, we decided to add unique features like attaching shower cubicles, providing drinks, and so on. Since the direction was decided, we discussed this more in an online meeting.

  • Week 13
For the final presentation, we finalize our ideas and proceed to prototype:
  1.  Finalise Van Sketch Details
  2.  Minecraft Van Prototype
  3.  Film Video Walkthrough of Prototype in Minecraft
  4.  Website Prototype
  5.  Finalise Logo Design
  6.  Digital Wellness Display Static Design/Animation
  7.  Task/Service Flow
  8.  Finalise User Testing Questions
I was charged for van sketches and task/service flow. However, I'm not good at drawing, so I did initial rough sketches and asked one of my group members to draw the detail. Here is the reference and rough sketches of the van.

At this point, we also conducted a second in-person interview with vendors and security guards to gain feedback for our prototype. After doing everything, we created presentation slides for the final.

  • Week 14

We gave a final presentation.

Reflection

This project was a meaningful experience that offered a glimpse into a real working environment. What made it special was the shift from purely aesthetic design to user-centric design based on in-person interviews. Through this process, I discovered my own strengths and weaknesses, especially regarding communication and collaboration within a diverse team.

Initially, I found it difficult to imagine how our team composed of different specializations would unite with the CHHM. However, through constant communication, we developed a unique service centered around a mobile van.

We struggled with brainstorming and felt stuck trying to find a truly unique angle. The turning point was the feedback from Dr. Wong, which helped us refine our ideas into specific, actionable services like providing cooling drinks and attaching shower cubicles. This stage taught me a vital lesson: I could never have reached this solution alone. I realized the importance of embracing multiple perspectives rather than relying solely on my own strengths.

The most challenging part of the project was conducting interviews with outdoor workers. Because they were busy and in the middle of their shifts, finding willing participants was difficult. Additionally, I faced a significant language barrier. Since I only speak English and not Chinese or Malay, I found fewer English-speaking participants than I had anticipated. This made the search time-consuming and stressful. However, successfully completing the interviews provided a great sense of relief and accomplishment, as it provided the raw data we needed to move forward.

In the prototyping phase, I was responsible for the initial van sketches. I began by researching various references, including camping cars, to create a rough conceptual layout. While drawing is not my strongest suit, this became an opportunity for collaboration. I presented my rough ideas to a teammate with stronger illustration skills, who then refined them into a detailed sketch. This exchange allowed my conceptual ideas to be visualized professionally, proving once again that teamwork compensates for individual weaknesses.

Overall, this project has been beneficial. To be honest, acknowledging my own weaknesses and limitations brought a lot of stress, and I often felt frustrated with myself. However, thanks to the support of my team, I was able to overcome these feelings. I intend to make the most of this experience and apply everything I have learned to my future projects.
