MBI

Task 2: Character concept development

Week 5

Fig.1-1 mood board

To begin with this task, I searched and collected reference for alternative outfit along with specific theme and character setting: the long winter has ended and spring has arrived, she has transformed into a more spiritual, ethereal, and filled with hope. At this stage, the color palette was considered to be  contrast with the previous design(blue and black), featuring white and warm tones such as soft pink.

Week 6-8

Fig. 1-2 Designing alternative outfit

Firstly, I drew the basic shape and elements of the outfit and then added details such as patterns and accessories.  I came up with 3 main ideas and decided which elements I would use for the final design with color exploration.

Fig. 1-3 equipment (bible)

I also designed equipment, the bible for my character based on the gothic and national flower of Lithuania to match with the character setting. I ended up choosing the brown color to suit both the original and alternative outfits.

Fig. 1-4 poses and expression exploration

As for this part, I used Pinterest and found references to practice poses and facial expressions. One of the difficult things is drawing the human body from a low angle. For the facial expression, I often changed the wide range of opening eyes and eyebrow direction to add movement.

Final submission

Feedback

Week 6: I showed a mood board of alternative outfits and was told that it would be fine.

Week 7: No feedback

Week 8: submitted

Reflection

Through this task, I realized that my challenge is translating different reference photos into my own character's proportions without losing the sense of perspective. I tend to lose track of the body's balance when working with extreme perspectives, especially from a low angle. It's hard to keep the proportions right when looking up at a character. In addition to this, I learned the importance of the way to incorporate design, which is key to impress the character. Overall, this task was kind of hard for me, but I got many findings I could improve.
