Task 3: Character Creation, Execution

Week 8

Fig. 1-1 Moodboard references

First of all, I searched the references for splash art backgrounds on Pinterest while deciding on the theme. Since my character is a spirit strongly connected to something sacred and winter in the character setting, I wanted to draw her with crosses and snow with cold colors. That's why I chose the splash art reference with cooler colors. Also, my character is a spirit, so I planned to add some magical elements like particles.

Week 9-10

Fig. 1-2 Splash art explorations

Using 2 poses from the previous task, I sketched 4 ideas with the elements I mentioned above. After receiving advice, I refined the ideas and finalized the pose and background.

Week 11

Fig. 1-3 Redrawing for final

Since I focused on the picture reference and pose itself in the previous task, I could not spend much time drawing deliberately. So I redraw the character with a pose and pay attention to detail. At this stage, I also reviewed the balance and translated the picture reference into a stylized drawing carefully.

Based on the final sketch, I began to draw and combine it with the character to complete it.

Feedback

Week 9: Highlighted the cross and drew detail on it. For the ground part, draw a circle, a rectangle, and other shapes with perspective.

Week 10: The cross at the back is not that visible, and the gate could've been individual crosses but different sizes to break away from the normal generic shapes and make the 'gate' more dynamic. I also like the swirls on the fourth one (on the right), but it seems too minimal for the expected outcome.

Week 11: submitted

Reflection

One of the most enjoyable things is designing and sketching backgrounds. Since the theme is clear, it was fun to brainstorm how I would tell the backstory or setting of this character. But I'm not good at drawing, and it gets worse with perspective, so I was struggling to draw deliberately. My different drawing style of character and background creates somewhat of an indifference, so I aimed to make the setting feel like a natural extension of their backstory rather than a separate entity by mirroring the character's tones within the environment. However, this is not a radical solution, so I'll practice drawing.
